BORNEAN RED CAT (Catopuma badia)

The Bay Cat (Catopuma badia), also known as Bornean Cat, Bornean Red Cat, Bornean Marbled Cat, Borneo-katze, Chat Bai, Gato Rojo de Borneo, Kucing Kalimantan, Kucing Merahor or Bornean Bay Cat, is a small feline endemic to the island of Borneo. The Bay Cat and the Asian Golden Cat (Catopuma temminckii) are the only members of the genus Catopuma.

Nearly everything that is known about this cat is based on just twelve specimens, the first of which was collected by Alfred Russel Wallace in 1855 in Sarawak. A total of seven further skins surfaced over the following decades, but it was not until 1992 that a living specimen was obtained, and there were no photographs of the animal until a second living specimen was captured in 1998.

Sunda Clouded Leopard (Neofelis diardi)

The Sunda Clouded Leopard (Neofelis diardi), also known as the Sundaland Clouded Leopard and is a medium-sized wild cat found in Borneo and Sumatra. In 2006, it was classified as a separate species, distinct from its continental relative Neofelis nebulosa. In 2008, the IUCN classified the species as vulnerable, with a total effective population size suspected to be fewer than 10,000 mature individuals, and a decreasing population trend.

BALI STARLING (Leucopsar rothschildi)

The Bali Starling, Leucopsar rothschildi, also known as Rothschild’s Mynah, Bali Myna, or Bali Mynah. This stunning starling qualifies as Critically Endangered because it has an extremely small range and a tiny population which is still suffering from illegal poaching for the cagebird trade. Releases of captively bred birds have boosted the population, but it is uncertain how many of these have yet bred successfully in the wild. In due course, if the population convintues to grow and trapping pressures can be brought under control, the species may warrant downlisting.

Objet d'art Release #159 "The Bali Starling" Bird Handmade Jeweled Metal Trinket BoxIdentification  25 cm. Medium-large, stocky starling. Almost wholly white with long, drooping crest, black wing-tips and tail tip. Blue bare skin around eye and legs, yellow bill. Similar sp. Black-winged Starling Sturnus melanopterus has shorter crest, much larger area of black on wings and tail and yellow eyering and legs. Voice Variety of sharp chattering calls and an emphatic twat.

This species is endemic to the island of Bali, Indonesia, where it formerly ranged across the north-west third of the island. It has perhaps long been uncommon (numbers in the early 1900s, the period of discovery, have been retrospectively guessed at 300-900, although this is thought to be a gross underestimate), but has declined drastically in population and range. Illegal poaching reduced numbers to a critically low level in 1990, when the wild population was estimated at c.15 birds.

Asian Leopard Cat (Prionailurus bengalensis)

The Leopard Cat (Prionailurus bengalensis) is a small wild cat of South and East Asia. Since 2002 it has been listed as Least Concern by IUCN as it is widely distributed but threatened by habitat loss and hunting in parts of its range. There are twelve leopard cat subspecies, which differ widely in appearance.

Physical characteristics

Leopard Cat are about the size of a Domestic Cat, but more slender with longer legs and well-defined webs between the toes. Their small head is marked with two prominent dark stripes, their short and narrow muzzle white. There are two dark stripes running from the eyes to the ears, and smaller white streaks running from the eyes to the nose. The backs of their moderately long and rounded ears are black with a central white spot. Body and limbs are marked with black spots of varying size and color, and along the back are two to four rows of elongated spots. The tail is about half the size of their head-body-length and spotted with a few indistinct rings near the black tip. The background color of their spotted fur is tawny with a white chest and belly.

THE JAVAN LEOPARD as being critically endangered

The Javan leopard (Panthera pardus melas) is a subspecies of leopard. It is in the order Carnivora and a member of the family Felidae. Leopards are the smallest of the big cats in the genus Panthera, which means “beast of all prey” in Greek. The Javan leopard has many leopard relatives but is not closely related to them as are other leopard species. Javan leopards have their own distinct lineage among leopard subspecies. They are, however, the sister taxon of all Asian leopards. Javan leopards, like all other leopard subspecies, can have either a normal spotted coat, or a recessive phenotype resulting in an all black coat.

The Javan Hawk-eagle (Nisaetus bartelsi)

The Javan Hawk-eagle (Nisaetus bartelsi) is a medium-sized, approximately 61 cm long, dark brown raptor in the family Accipitridae. It has a long crest, rufous head and neck, and heavily barred black below. The crest is black with white tip. Both sexes are similar. The young is duller and has unmarked underparts.

An Indonesian endemic, the Javan Hawk-eagle is distributed in humid tropical forests of Java. Because of the plumages variability of Spizaetus eagle, the Javan Hawk-eagle was not recognised as a full species until 1953.

One of the rarest of all raptors, the Javan Hawk-eagle is believed to be a monogamous species. The female usually lays one egg in nest high on top of forest trees. The diet consists mainly of birds, lizards, fruit bats and mammals.

THE JAVAN TIGER (Panthera tigris sondaica)

The Javan tiger (Panthera tigris sondaica) is an extinct tiger subspecies. It inhabited the Indonesian island of Java until the 1980s and was one of the three subspecies limited to islands.
Javan tigers were very small compared to other subspecies of the Asian mainland, but larger in size than Bali tigers. Males weighed between 100 and 140 kg (220 and 310 lb) on average with a body length of 200 to 245 cm (6.6 to 8.04 ft). Females were smaller than males and weighed between 75 and 115 kg (170 and 250 lb) on average.
